Agile Working, Hybrid Working and Home-Working ...

Alan Kitto

During the Government imposed lockdown periods in 2020 and 2021, many companies were forced to embrace the idea of their team members working from home; many of these companies would have flatly refused a home working request prior to lockdown but realised quickly that, done properly, it really can bring benefits to all parties.

Having documented policies about hybrid working, agile working, or home working is a highly recommended practice for employers. Here are several reasons why we feel it is beneficial:

  1. Clear Guidelines: A documented policy provides clear guidelines and expectations for both employees and managers regarding hybrid working, agile working, or, home working arrangements. They outline the rules, procedures, and expectations related to scheduling, communication, work hours, collaboration, and other relevant aspects. This clarity ensures consistency and helps avoid confusion or misinterpretation.

  2. Consistency and Fairness: Policies ensure consistency in how hybrid working, agile working, or home working is implemented across an organisation. They help establish fair practices and ensure that all employees have equal opportunities to request and benefit from flexible work arrangements. This consistency promotes transparency and reduces the risk of favoritism or discrimination.

  3. Compliance and Legal Protection: Documented policies ensure compliance with legal requirements and regulations related to remote work, data security, confidentiality, and health and safety. They help protect the employer by addressing important considerations such as data privacy, liability, and insurance coverage. Clear policies also demonstrate the employer’s commitment to creating a safe and legally compliant work environment.

  4. Employee Support and Well-being: Having documented policies signal to employees that their well-being and work-life balance are valued by the company. They provide a framework for addressing individual needs and requests for flexibility, promoting employee satisfaction, engagement, and retention. The policies can also include provisions for regular check-ins, performance evaluations, and opportunities for career development for remote or hybrid employees.

  5. Communication and Transparency: Policies serve as a communication tool that can be shared with all employees. They help set expectations, clarify procedures, and ensure transparency in decision-making processes related to flexible work arrangements. This proactive communication fosters trust and reduces uncertainty, facilitating a smoother transition to hybrid or agile work models.

  6. Adaptability and Scalability: Documented policies allow for scalability and adaptability as the company grows or changes over time. they provide a foundation upon which adjustments and improvements can be made based on feedback, lessons learned, and evolving needs. Regularly reviewing and updating the policies ensure their relevance and effectiveness in supporting the company’s goals.
